DLMS / COSEM Driver for Tridium Niagara
DLMS/COSEM is the worldwide standard for reading utility meters – the electricity, gas, water, and heat meters that energy suppliers install as the revenue meters a site is billed on. Maintained by the DLMS User Association and published as the IEC 62056 series, it is the protocol behind the majority of smart meters in service today. The DLMS/COSEM driver connects Tridium Niagara directly to these meters, discovers the values they publish, and polls them into the station as live points.
For a Niagara integrator this brings a building’s principal energy data into the same platform that already runs its HVAC, lighting, and sub-metering. Consumption, demand, voltage, current, power factor, and every other quantity the meter exposes become standard points on the JACE or Supervisor – ready to trend, alarm, present on dashboards, and combine with sub-meter readings for tenant billing, cost allocation, and building-performance reporting. Because the utility’s revenue meter is frequently the same device, the driver is strictly read-only: it polls the meter and never writes, so no value or setting can be altered from Niagara.
The driver carries DLMS/COSEM over HDLC (IEC 62056-46) or the IEC 62056-47 wrapper, and reaches a meter over whichever path is available – directly over TCP/IP to a meter with a network port or one behind a serial-to-Ethernet gateway, or over RS-485, RS-232, or an optical connection through an inexpensive converter. On an IP network it discovers meters automatically, probing an endpoint, identifying how the meter communicates, and listing each one ready to add as a fully configured device. A single device model spans the full range of hardware: modern meters that expose their complete object model over the binary DLMS protocol, and older meters that provide only a plain serial readout, so a mixed fleet of new and legacy meters is covered by one driver.

What is OBIS?
OBIS, the Object Identification System, is the scheme DLMS uses to name every value in a meter, such as total active energy import or instantaneous voltage. The codes are numeric and hard to read by hand, so the driver translates each discovered value into a clear name with the correct engineering units automatically.
How does a meter connect to Niagara?
A meter with a network port, or one behind a serial-to-Ethernet gateway, connects over TCP/IP. A serial meter connects to a JACE serial port over RS-485 – where several meters can share one bus – or RS-232, and an optical or current-loop meter connects through an inexpensive converter.
How does automatic device discovery work?
On an IP network the driver can find meters for you. Enter the address to probe – with a password if the meter is secured – and the driver checks that the meter is reachable, works out how it communicates, reads its identity, and lists it ready to add as a fully configured device. Discovery is read-only and never changes the meter.
Can the driver change meter settings?
No. The driver only reads the meter; no writing is implemented, so no value or setting can be changed from Niagara. This is deliberate: DLMS meters are frequently the utility’s revenue meters, and read-only operation guarantees that connecting one to a building management system can never affect a reading or a configuration.
