Siemens Apogee P2 Driver for Tridium Niagara

This driver is currently in development and will be released soon.

The Siemens Apogee P2 Driver for Tridium Niagara enables direct communication with panel-level controllers on the Siemens P2 bus, also known as ALN (Automation Level Network) or BLN (Building Level Network). Operating one tier above the P1/FLN field bus, the P2 protocol connects to MEC, PXC, and MBC supervisory controllers — the central intelligence of Apogee and System 600 building automation systems.

Building owners with Siemens Apogee or System 600 installations often need to replace aging management workstations and supervisory software while preserving their panel infrastructure. The P2 Driver addresses this by connecting Niagara directly to the automation level, providing full visibility into point values and alarms. Because P2 panels also manage downstream P1/FLN field devices, a single P2 connection can expose an entire building’s control hierarchy — from supervisory logic down to individual TECs, VFDs, and sensors.

The driver communicates using Siemens’ proprietary P2 protocol over Ethernet. Point discovery enumerates all available points with their system names, engineering units, and descriptions. The driver supports Change of Value (COV) subscriptions, where the panel pushes updates only when values change — reducing network traffic and providing faster response times compared to traditional polling.

The P2 network supports a range of Siemens panel controllers. MEC (Modular Equipment Controller) panels are the traditional workhorses of Apogee systems, managing HVAC sequences and coordinating field devices. PXC modular and compact controllers represent the newer generation with enhanced processing capabilities. MBC (Modular Building Controller) panels handle building-wide coordination, and the Power MEC variant adds enhanced Ethernet connectivity. Each panel can manage multiple FLN trunks, providing access to dozens of downstream TECs, VFDs, power meters, and lab controllers.

The Apogee and System 600 platforms represent decades of Siemens presence in building automation, with installations spanning commercial offices, healthcare facilities, educational campuses, and industrial complexes worldwide. Many of these facilities have panel controllers running reliable PPCL (Powers Process Control Language) programs that have been fine-tuned over years of operation. The P2 Driver integrates alongside these existing programs, reading and writing point data without disrupting the control logic running on the panels.

Tridium’s Niagara Framework offers the ideal modernization platform for these legacy Siemens systems. As an open, interoperable framework, Niagara unifies diverse building systems under a single management interface while providing enterprise connectivity and mobile access. Niagara also connects to various cloud-based and on-premise analytical and AI systems, enabling predictive maintenance, energy optimization, and intelligent fault detection. The P2 Driver extends these capabilities to the automation level, creating a seamless bridge between proven Siemens panel infrastructure and contemporary building management requirements.

If you manage a facility with Siemens Apogee or System 600 equipment and need to modernize your building automation infrastructure, Baudrate’s Apogee P2 Driver for Tridium Niagara provides the integration solution. Whether replacing legacy management workstations, consolidating multiple buildings under unified management, or enabling new analytics and optimization strategies, the P2 Driver preserves your panel-level investment while unlocking the full potential of the Niagara platform.
